The purpose of environmental enrichment is to increase the overall welfare of the dog by allowing the dog to burn off calories in a safe and natural way, which in turn allows it to behave more naturally in a restricted environment. The animal learns to cope with unexpected changes in the environment, and is less likely to be stressed by handling, restraint, and change in environment. A decrease in emotional behaviours furthermore indicates a decrease in physiological and psychological stress.
Pet behavioural problems can develop in the absence of proper care, including lack of stimulation and behavioural enrichment. Your pet relies on you for shaping desirable behaviours, as well as providing healthy meals, medical care, basic training, grooming, a safe and secure environment, regular exercise (including safe and stimulating toys), socialisation, and most importantly - lots of love.
Prevention is the best method of avoiding problem behaviours. Your local veterinarian can provide you with referrals for basic training classes, and sources of information on proper pet care.
At CLICKER ZONE UK, we recommend training new behaviours in short, stimulating steps in conjunction with lots of opportunities to earn positive reinforcement. Once behaviour is mastered, reward with a Havaball® play session.

Fix undesirable behaviours by rewarding desirable behaviours. Experts agree that positive reinforcement training will provide the most superior and long lasting results.
Negative reinforcement or harsh physical corrections during training can result in a confused and aggressive animal. The more your pet is actively engaged in positive play during Havaball® sessions or training exercises, the less time he or she has to develop undesirable behaviours. In some cases of inappropriate or dangerous behaviours, consult your veterinarian, or APDT trainer for advice.
