With any new toy, and especially with a pet known to chew up or destroy most other toys, it is always our advice that the owner supervises their pets Havaball play. We also, advise the owner to limit the Havaball play sessions in the beginning in order to teach the pet the proper use of the Havaball, i.e. when introducing the Havaball fill it with treats that dispense easily.
Let the animal learn how to release these treats, after all the treats have been dispensed REWARD the animal and remove the Havaball. Supervise each session until the animal understands when the ball is empty, and therefore is not to be eaten. Hopefully, with some patience their pet will come to know that the reward is not eating the Havaball, but more correctly, the reward comes out of the Havaball.
Every dog is different, and his or her behaviours vary greatly. Some dogs will understand and enjoy the Havaball immediately, others take some coaching, and further, some will require supervision and behaviour modification.
All dogs are capable of destroying any toy, given time and determination. Conversely, most dogs are capable of learning to enjoy a given toy, and have the ability to differentiate an edible toy versus a play toy (non-edible toy). As I mentioned, with some animals these learned behaviours will require some time and effort from the pet owner, but this quality time spent with your pet will be reward in itself.
