Feral dogs, wolves, coyote's, foxes, hyenas, and many more species are hunter-scavengers, born opportunists who would spend a large proportion of their daily energy looking for food, as an animal's hunting and foraging skills are essential for survival. Your pet's needs are very similar.
Providing an enriching and stimulating environment is an important factor in raising a healthy well-adjusted pet. Feeding your pet by bowl at regular intervals will satisfy your pet's nutritional needs, but does nothing to address your pet's psychological and emotional needs. Adding interactive feeding toy sessions to your pet's normal feeding schedule will be a rewarding and learning experience for them.
In contrast we place all their food in a bowl and its gone in seconds and we wonder why the dog is bored or under stimulated and now has extra time to devote to those misbehaviours!
Many zoos have included a variety of interactive feeding programs into their animal's daily feeding schedule. Some of these interactive feeding programs mimic foraging choices similar to that found in an animal's natural habitat, including hiding food, or hanging fruit from a tree.
Other programs use unusual and challenging food items that provide mental stimulation, such as frozen mixtures of natural foods, feeder puzzles, or food stuffed interactive toys. The results of these programs have added variety and enrichment for zoo animals, and have helped decrease depression, pacing, and boredom common to animals in captivity.
Stuff your Havaball® with healthy foods or treats. As your pet plays with the Havaball® it will periodically provide a reward by releasing food or treats. The longer he or she plays with Havaball®, the more your pet will be rewarded. Your pet will love playing with Havaball®! Working for food will stimulate your pet's natural instinct to problem solve by exercising their mind and body.
To make future Havaball® sessions extra special, we recommend removing the Havaball® after each play period.
